Haiti

http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/510.html

From Brasschecktv:
Haiti is the only country in history where an enslaved people threw over their captors and took charge of their country.

And generations later, the global slave masters have never let them forget it.

The poorest country in the western hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world, it's been run by one band of criminals after another.

This year Haiti took direct hits from four major hurricanes.

It's rare to get news about Haiti in the US. Rarer still for Haitians to be portrayed as human beings.

How you can help

Haitian people are not short of initiative, man-power or courage.

They do need some help from the outside world following the storms. But a little, well-targeted aid to grass roots projects will go far.

Most good-sized, reliable aid organizations have projects in Haiti.

You can donate through those groups and specify that you want your donation to go to projects in Haiti.

Specific suggestions:

Music for our times

Flow, my tears, fall from your springs!
Exiled for ever, let me mourn;
Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings,
There let me live forlorn.

Down vain lights, shine you no more!
No nights are dark enough for those
That in despair their lost fortunes deplore.
Light doth but shame disclose.

Never may my woes be relieved,
Since pity is fled;
And tears and sighs and groans my weary days
Of all joys have deprived.

From the highest spire of contentment
My fortune is thrown;
And fear and grief and pain for my deserts
Are my hopes, since hope is gone.

Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell,
Learn to contemn light
Happy, happy they that in hell
Feel not the world's despite.

Bill Clinton: US Must Spend Its Way Out Of Crisis

No, me thinks not.

From the SnL crisis, the dot-com crash, and now to the crash of the housing bubble, spending provides a temporary respite, delaying the pain. This time is different, as none of our debts have ever been so huge (national debt, deficit, etc.). Better deflation from lack of spending, than inflation and a worthless dollar. Let the giants crash. We'll pick up the pieces and build something new. We can't spend our way to nirvana. Eventually, the day of reckoning arrives.

The Auto Bailout

After sending our jobs overseas, the auto manufacturers want more $$ to do more of the same? Why don't they ask China directly? That's where the money would come from anyways, and that's where their jobs and factories have gone.

The character issue

"My husband's parents left the U.S. when he was 9, promising him they would come back, but they never did. He never got to see those friends again. That explains a lot about his character."
"No, what explains a lot about his character is that you use this as a narrative for explaining something you like to call, 'his character.' What explains a lot about his character is that you both have decided to dwell on this nonsense."
